This workshop will cover a brief history of indigenous plant use, the diversity of Australian food plants, how to incorporate bushfoods into your garden and how to use them in the kitchen.
With a Masters degree in horticulture as well as qualifications in garden design, permaculture, botany and teaching, Claudia is well equipped to help you find the right bushfood plants for your garden. As a designer she specialises in edible garden design and loves to integrate bushfoods and other rare edibles into her beautiful landscapes.
You will be able to sample some dishes made with native flavours and take home recipes to get you started.

CENTRE GARDEN GROUP

Come together with Jeanette and other members of the Centre to share the love of gardening and revitalise our community garden. John Ferris owner of Edible Forest Gardens Nursery based in Wonga Park has been in horticulture since he was 15 and has kindly donated his time to guide us through the steps to create an edible forest garden in our own backyard. John's philosophy is to create beautiful gardens that can be not only enjoyed, but picked for your table and cooking pot. This is exactly the vision we have for OUR community garden! We held our first garden group meeting in September and left feeling excited and inspired about what we will be achieving in the future. The garden group will meet monthly for a couple of hours. If you would like to join the garden group please come along and be part of revolutionising our community garden. We have been successful in securing some funding to help start but for the first couple of gardening days will need members to BYO garden tools until we establish what tools we need and then purchase. BYO gardening gloves and hat too.

INTRODUCTION TO HOBBY BEEKEEPING

Bees are excellent pollinators spending most of their life is spent collecting pollen and most crops grown for their fruit, require pollination by insects. Christos the beekeeper has been a Hobbyist Beekeeper for 20 years, keeps approximately 40 beehives in and around the Yarra Valley and supplies honey to retail outlets in the local area. In this workshop, Christos will demonstrate and explain everything you need to know (no live bees) to start your beekeeping hobby. Christos will explain the best sites to place hives and will bring along un-assembled woodwork to demonstrate how to assemble a hive. The Yarra Glen Children's Choir aims to provide an opportunity for children aged 7 to 15 to develop vocal skills, self-esteem, confidence and social connection whilst having fun singing in a group.
Participants will engage in vocal exercises, rhythm games, singing in parts, basic music theory and a variety of songs from around the world.
During the last two decades Angie has taught instrumental voice and vocal ensemble in both secondary & primary schools as well as facilitating a variety of community music making groups that include the Aboriginal Children's Choir in Healesville, Panton Hill Youth Choir, Whittlesea Peoples Christmas Choir, Acapella singing groups & workshops through a number of community centres, local government events & Adult Learning Centres. Angie has facilitated music & singing sessions for Mothers and Babies groups & Mental Health support & recovery programs for both youth and adults. Angie has an Advanced Diploma in Jazz and Contemporary Music (NMIT) & a Graduate Diploma in Experimental & Creative Arts Therapy (MIECAT).
The choir will work toward creating a small repertoire of songs to perform for family & friends, with possible involvement in local community events.

MEN'S GAMES FOR THE BRAIN BUSINESS

Join Stan for an informal day of games for the brain. Cribbage, chess and more. This fortnightly social gathering is for men to come together for a chat, meet new people and to stimulate the brain cells.
So come along, bring your lunch and have some FUN! Coffee, tea and bickies provided.

WINTER LIGHT FESTIVAL

The community is once again invited to help celebrate the Yarra Glen Winter Lights Festival 2016 by participating in this collaborative volunteer event which aims to foster town identity and celebrate our growing community. With the primary focus around a magical journey and lantern parade this year, we aim to encourage school children and community to the town centre of Yarra Glen in an event that is unique to our location and community. It is intended that this event will become an annual festival, being self-sufficient through local business support, crowd funding campaigns and philanthropic support.
The lantern parade will commence at 5.30pm in the Mackenzie Reserve, and will encourage the community into the township of Yarra Glen.
All lanterns will be made into a communal light tree, which will remain in the park for the night of the event.

We are looking for donations of wool and lace which can be left with our Reading Room Volunteers at the Memorial Hall or at the Yarra Glen Living & Learning Centre.

STORYTIME AT THE YARRA GLEN COMMUNITY READING ROOM

Mondays 4 July, 1 August and 5 September
10.30am - 11.00am
Bring your child along to Storytime and enjoy the magic of stories. Reading to your child will encourage development of a lifelong love of reading and books. Ros will read a mixture of stories, rhymes and songs suitable for 0-6 year olds. Don't forget to bring along a cuddly toy.
Location: Yarra Glen Community Reading Room
Enrolment Options and Instructions:
If you are already attending a class, please enrol at term end to hold your place and to avoid disappointment - some classes have a waiting list.
You may enrol on Enrolment Day or by mail to reach the Centre by the first day of term.
You may place enrolment forms and payment in the letterbox outside the office door or the internal
letterbox next to the interconnecting door into the Tennis Club area.
Class and membership fees must be paid before the commencement of class.
Class fees MUST be paid to the Office not the class Tutor
If a class you have enrolled in is cancelled you will be notified and refunded.
No classes will be held on Code Red days & the Centre will be closed.
